Summer Fun at Vacation Bible School (VBS)

Do you have time this summer to fit in a Vacation Bible School?

Many area churches have a VBS (Vacation Bible School) program.

Did you ever want to visit New York City, the Big Apple?

I am going to be a helper this coming week, June 13-17, 2011, at my church's VBS called the Big Apple.  Come and join me at First Baptist of Atlanta (fba.org).  You can register on line or come in person register at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 13.

I hope you get to attend a VBS this summer!

Our year is coming to a close with some amazing events....

We had so much fun last Friday, May 6th, at the Yellow River Game Ranch.  We celebrated May and summer birthday parties in our classroom this week.

Our Around the World travels have ended with returning home to America and we are busy preparing for our Great Performance, "Salute to America,"  on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. in The Heiskell School gym.

We have had a wonderful year and hope to see you at the Great Performance on Wednesday.

Muffins With Mom Was a Special Treat

The kindergarten children had a wonderful morning hosting their moms for muffins.  What great fun for children to interact with all the moms and their classmates.  We sang a special song, "Our Mom is an Awesome Mom."

What a joy as a teacher to see the children showing off their classroom and getting all excited as they prepared for their moms to visit!

Atlanta Opera Touring Company... Pirates of Penzance

We had a wonderful Friday morning as the children of The Heiskell School were able to go to the opera right in our own school.  Members of the Atlanta Opera Touring Company came to present the opera, Pirates of Penzance.  We saw many smiles from the audience!

Africa is a fun place to visit

We had the pleasure of a visit from the parents of one of our children, who are from Ethiopia.  We ate delicious Ethiopian food (with our hands).  This is the custom in Ethiopia to eat your food with your hands.

Miss Kathy shared her missionary journey to Ghana with the children when she served on the Mercy Ship.  We even learned an African dance and acted out being in an African worship service.

This coming week we are looking forward to making African drums and binoculars for our safari!

We are traveling to South Africa first....

...on our tour of the continent of Africa.  Kindergarten Plus is an exciting place to be!  The mom of one of our student's, Mrs. J., came and spoke to the children about her many visits to South Africa.  We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon and saw some great photos and displays.

On Friday we will have a visit from another mom who is from Ethiopia.  We cannot wait!

Kindergarten Plus Traveled to Asian Countries

We have been busy in Kindergarten Plus traveling to China, Japan and India during February.  The children are having so much fun learning about the cultures and we even ate some Japanese crackers (with a hint of seaweed taste).  Some children loved the taste and others said, "No, thank you."

Miss Kathy has friends who are missionaries in Japan and they will be sending the children a special snack.  We cannot wait to receive the package.

Pajamas and Popsicles

The kindergarten children had a great pajama party this morning.  Children (and teachers) came to school wearing their PJs.  What a treat!

In Miss Kathy's class, we sang songs, did some of school work, and then sat down with our stuffed animals in circle time and listened to bedtime stories, ate our snacks and said a prayer.  Mom and Dad....the children are already for bed.  Just brush your teeth and get tucked in tonight!

A special treat was eating the popsicles outside at recess on a bright, sunny morning.

I have the sweetest class

My classroom was full of hearts and love on Monday that flowed into Tuesday.  What great delight I had in seeing the children so excited to share their Valentine's with one another as we remembered that God's love is the greatest love.

A big thank you to the two moms who helped to make our party a success.  The children got to decorate their own heart-shaped cookie with frosting, M&Ms and conversation candy.  Later they played "Heart Bingo" using the M&M and candy as markers.

Learning About China in Kindergarten Plus

We are having a lot of fun in Kindergarten Plus learning about China.  The children have been making Chinese dragon puppets and learning about the food and culture.  We will also be making panda bear masks.  Ask your children questions about the panda bear and let them teach you what they have learned!

Who are those cute pups?

We had a wonderful day on Friday as the children celebrated 101 Days of school. The children ate doggie bone cookies, played games and we learned to count doggie bones on a math paper.  The day ended with counting 100 items in groups of 10 and watching 101 Dalmatians.

News for Parents

We had a wonderful time with parents at our January Kindergarten Parents Workshop last evening, Tuesday, January 18, 2011.  The inclement weather last week kept us from reminding everyone about the workshop.

If you were unable to atttend, at parent conferences I will be able to update you on what the children will be learning in the next few months.

We are off to a great start for the second half of the year.

Do you remember 2 +3 = 5?  In the next week or two we will be introducing the steps of addition to the children.

Why not let your child teach you the addition steps this next week.

Ending with a week of snow/ice days off from school

We are being safe by being out of school on Friday, January 14, 2011, finishing up a week long of snow/ice days.   This is good because I still would not have been able to get out of my street. I am beginning to see some signs of thawing.

Please remember that Monday, January 17th is a Holiday...so we will resume school on Tuesday, January 18, 2011.

Enjoy the rest of your time off!  I will be glad to see my students on Tuesday.

Welcome to 2011...A Winter Blast

Do you believe that we are in Atlanta, Georiga?  The news reporters kept saying that it does not happen too often but it sure can and it did!

What a nice surprise, especially for the children...no school today, Monday, January 10, 2011, and time to make a snowman and go sledding.

Enjoy your day.
